Developing a speculative office in the outer-urban areas of Austin tends to follow a trend; build a beige painted building with minimal windows and a large floor plate. Generational Commercial Properties elected to reverse that trend and instead sought a design that was simple yet refined. The priority for Riata Crossing 6 was to enhance the building user’s experience while maintaining a high degree of efficiency and flexibility. This was accomplished through protecting outdoor spaces and materiality. Oak trees were preserved to create canopied spaces nestled beside the building to encourage interaction between the interior and exterior. Simple materials with texture generate interest with shadow play and employ forms that are scaled to the individual.
