Located within Mueller’s Southeast Greenway, the design for the Skate Park shade canopies and restroom builds off the movement of the new skatepark and cycle pump track. The Architect sought inspiration from various origins, including a street market in Mexico City shadowed with tarps of different colors and the Jesus Guzman Campanario Pavilion installation with its impactful shadow patterning. The vibrant canopies use solids and voids to create a whimsical experience for users while they cool off and watch the action. The initial design for the canopies was well received by the client, however they expressed concerns over budget, long-term maintenance, and shade density. The design team worked with the fabricator through several iterations to reduce cost and improve durability while safeguarding the playful intent. The final design utilizes vibrant large-format panels with small yet impactful water-jet cut openings mounted on top of a simplified steel frame.
