Creative Action, a non-profit dedicated to empowering youth and families through arts-based education, has been a cornerstone of the Greater Austin community since 1997.

As their programs continued to grow, they outgrew their space at Springdale General and secured a generous grant to build a new facility at the Mueller Development. The new location was chosen for its central accessibility, allowing Creative Action to better serve Austin’s diverse children and families.

Studio8 Architects was brought on board to design a vibrant, welcoming facility that reflects Creative Action’s mission to inspire creativity, unlock potential, and promote social justice. The challenge was to work within the tight footprint next to a neighboring middle school while adhering to Mueller’s development guidelines and maintaining a budget-conscious approach. The result is a thoughtfully designed space that fosters creativity and connection, meeting the needs of Creative Action’s growing community.

Creative Action’s students and staff, both part-time and full-time, took part in interactive visioning charrettes with Studio8. This collaborative process ensured that everyone’s voice was heard, including concerns, needs, and preferences. The goal was to make the new facility feel like it reflected the input of the students and staff.

Several students expressed a desire for the space to not resemble a traditional school. They enjoyed the unique atmosphere of Springdale General and didn’t want to leave one school just to enter another. Ideas ranged from providing more outdoor space for play and performance to increasing storage for theater productions.

As the back of the building buts up against the Marshall middle school, we needed to find a creative way to screen the drop off entry, creating an aesthetically pleasing barrier from the AISD drop off lane.

Colorful murals, and opportunities for outdoor gathering areas for productions helps Creative Action better serve its purpose.

This corridor goes beyond simply connecting spaces—it serves as the creative hub of the building, designed to engage all who pass through. A meandering light fixture above invites visitors to linger, allowing them to contemplate the paintings and murals, peek into different studios, or settle into one of the cozy nooks.

The Visual Arts studios are separated by an operable partition, allowing the space to function as two distinct classrooms or combine into one large, communal studio as needed. Tall glass windows and double doors bring in ample natural light, providing easy access to the kiln room, ventilation, and artistic inspiration. The overall space is intended to be a blank canvas for artists to fill while the tectum cloud ceilings help mitigate sound.

This restroom design aligns with Creative Action’s mission to celebrate diversity. It features playful elements, such as a pink portal entrance, paint-splattered countertops, and theatrical lighting. These design choices invite creativity and self-expression.
