American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Headquarters
The design for the national headquarters of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners focuses on health and well-being. The new building is the non-profit’s first owner-operated facility, which will allow it to expand and accommodate flexibility for the future.
In addition to accommodating offices for more than 60 staffers, the program also includes an all-hands room, conference rooms, a board room, a staff workroom, as well as a coffee bar, fitness room, and a third-floor break room with access to outdoor seating on the terrace.
The traditional office design vocabulary is modernized and reinterpreted through the use of color, natural light, and texture, creating a fresh and compelling design.
The building’s placement on the site orients views from the glass-fronted façade to the south toward an expanse of treetops and sky. With a slight L-shape footprint, the mostly rectangular volume has subtle extrusions in its geometry to activate the exterior planes.
The largely transparent western end of the building faces the vehicular approach and orients approaching visitors. Stone, steel, and glass work together to create a dynamic exterior that connects with its Central Texas home.
The design emphasizes walkability, with flowing spaces connecting perimeter offices and collaboration zones. Casual interactions are encouraged with ancillary seating, while a central lobby stair and additional end stairs ensure seamless movement between offices, meeting rooms, storage, and break areas.
Workplace wellness and comfort are achieved through simple finishes like tile flooring, wall treatments, custom carpentry, and granite-topped casework. Wood accents on stairs, walls, and ceilings create a cohesive design language, while details such as cross-angle patterns in wood and tile echo the site’s cactus thorns.
The All-Hands room for staff meetings and events is located on ground floor of the prominent western corner, and is accessible from the public, two-story lobby. Encased on two sides in floor-to-ceiling glass, it connects visually to a green lawn and landscaping that will screen views to and from the parking lot.
An open-air terrace sits on top of the cantilevered box on the third floor, shaded by deep overhangs.
